Mas, o que essa música tem a ver com "Love Will Tear Us Apart" da banda Joy Division?
Em 1979 o vocalista e líder da banda Ian Curtis escreveu a letra, que refletia a má fase de seu casamento com Debora Curtis e também seria uma 'resposta' ao hit "Love Will Keep Us Together" de Captain & Tennille.
Analisando as letras não há nada que indique, mas a inspiração é clara: "..Keep us together" retrata cenas de ciúmes, onde a 'salvação' é apenas o 'amor'. "...Tear us apart" lança o veredito final, onde o excesso de 'amor' vai acabar mesmo é com o relacionamento do casal.

O tom amargo de "...tear us apart" tornou-se claro um mês antes do lançamento da música em Junho de 1980: Ian Curtis cometeu suicídio se enforcando na cozinha de sua casa. No toca-discos estava o disco de Iggy Pop, "The Idiot".A música chegou ao #13 na Parada Britânica de sucessos. A banda se desfez e os integrantes fundaram o New Order.
Em sua lápide o nome da música estampa o vaticínio: "Love will tear us apart".
Curiosidade: No final de "Love Will Keep Us Together" o autor da música foi 'homenageado' com a frase "Sedaka is back" que é dita baixinho.
